Big goals fail on day four. This challenge works the other way: start close to where you are, add a little each week and build in easy days so your legs, and your motivation, keep up. By day 30 you’ll be walking around 9,000 to 10,000 steps a day, and it will feel normal.
How it works
- Hit the day’s target, any way you like. One long walk or three short ones both count.
- Easy days are part of the plan. Days 4, 11, 18 and 25 drop back so you recover.
- Missed a day? Pick up where you are tomorrow. Don’t double up.
- Already walking more? Add the difference between your current daily average and 4,000 to every target.

Week by week
Week 1: find your rhythm
Notice when you naturally walk, and add one short walk at the same time each day. After a meal is the easiest slot to keep.
Week 2: make it automatic
Tie walks to things you already do: a phone call, the school run, a coffee. A habit sticks faster when it hangs off an old one.
Week 3: bring someone
Walking with a friend makes the time fly and makes skipping harder. Even a weekly shared goal helps.
Week 4: go a little further
Split the bigger targets into two or three walks, explore somewhere new, and finish the month with your longest walk yet.
Make it stick with VirtuPet
VirtuPet turns this plan into a game. Set your daily goal and your pet’s health follows your steps, so every target you hit shows up as a happier pet. Your streak grows with each goal day, eggs on the map give your walks somewhere to go, and a Duo Challenge lets you take on a weekly step goal with a friend. It’s free on iPhone and reads your steps from Apple Health.
A quick safety note
Walking is one of the safest ways to move more, but if you have a heart condition, joint pain or any health concern, check with your doctor before stepping up your activity. Comfortable shoes, water on warm days and a lighter target on any day you feel unwell all help.
